 What the movie’s Plot is?

This masterpiece revolves around two friends Pádraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson). They both used to visit the pub and have drinks, and they both used to live down the street from one another on an island off the coast of Ireland in 1923.

But Pádraic is not ready to give up on their friendship, as he inquires more about this sudden change in Colm’s decision. He learns that Colm finds him dull and he doesn’t want to waste his remaining life doing nothing and just drinking in the pub. Being overwhelmed by this thought Colm takes this decision.

He further tells Pádraic that since they both haven’t conversed; he was able to do so much work on his new song which he thinks will be the new superhit of their era. In Colm's speech, we can see that he is more ambitious. We cannot forget the role of Pádraic’s sister Siobhán (Kerry Condon) as she helps in getting their friendship back together.

Pádraic tries to talk to Colm, but he is consistent that he doesn’t want to continue this friendship and he wants that everyone leaves him so he can work on his career being a musician. He threatens if not left alone he will cut off his finger.

The unstable young son of the local constable, Dominic (Barry Keoghan), becomes Pádraic's new drinking partner and prods him to call Colm's bluff on the finger threat.

Padraic gets drunk and yells at Colm for not being a nice guy (or perhaps, he says, for never being a nice guy in the first place), Colm argues back that no one will be remembered In history for being a nice the same way a great musician will be remembered for their music.

But at this point in the movie Colm rethinks his decision and tells Dominic that he likes him again. After hearing this Padraic next day proposes to Colm that they should be friends again, Colm who seemed pretty normal the other day suddenly cuts off his index finger and throws it at Padraic’s front door.

Tough Love

Colm learns to play the fiddle with only four fingers. Dominic tells Padraic that the other day Colm liked it when he was yelling at him drunk. So Padraic who is ready to go to any lengths tries the ‘’Tough Love” approach. He forcefully enters the Colm’s house. Colm tells him that he has completed his masterpiece song, called ‘’ The Banshees of Inisherin”.

Padraic congratulates him, and now they both seemed to be friends again but doesn’t last long as he reveals that he tricked one of Colm’s musician friends into leaving the island, by telling the musician his dad was dying. Without realizing its consequences.

On that very night, Colm cuts the rest of the four fingers and throws them at the doorstep of Padraic.

Padraic’s beloved donkey, whom he keeps around when he is sad, choked on one of the fingers and dies.

Why did Colm cut off his fingers in The Banshees of Inisherin?

The enigma lies in the fact that the act of mutilating his own hands doesn't align with his reason for ending his friendship. The film fails to shed light on why Colm took such a drastic step, but speculations suggest that his constant need to be recognized as a musical genius may have driven him into depression. Colm confides in a priest about his feelings of "despair". His fixation on leaving a lasting impression as a musician is evident when he shares his thoughts with Pádraic at the pub. By severing his fingers and blaming Pádraic for his actions, he may have relieved himself of the burden of constantly striving for musical greatness.
